Male Imparts More to Embryo than Just DNA

first_imgA team of biologists have confirmed that male sperm RNAs are delivered to the oocyte along with the DNA.  Specifically, paternal messenger RNAs are delivered to the egg.  These might influence development and put the male’s imprint on the developing zygote.  Writing in Nature,1 the researchers speculate what the finding means:Why should spermatozoa messenger RNAs be transferred to the oocyte?  Messenger RNAs encoding proteins that bind nucleic acids, such as protamine-2, are likely to be deleterious and are probably degraded following entry, and a similar fate may await other RNAs that gain access.  But some may have a role in the developing zygote: for example, clusterin (also known as sulphated glycoprotein-2, or SGP-2) is delivered to the oocyte and has been implicated in cell-cell and cell-substratum interactions, enhancement of fertility rate, lipid transportation, membrane recycling, stabilization of stress proteins, and promotion or inhibition of apoptosis.  These may therefore be required in the early zygote but unnecessary in the oocyte.  Alternatively (or in addition), these and other unidentified molecules, such as small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), may participate in processes such as pronuclear formation, the orchestration of events leading to oocyte activation, the transition from maternal to embryonic gene control, and the establishment of imprints in early embryos. But haven’t cloning and parthenogenesis experiments shown the male contribution to the zygote is dispensable? However, the success of such experiments and of somatic-cell nuclear transfer is limited, as is the production of human embryonic stem cells after somatic-cell nuclear transfer.  This may be because sperm RNAs contribute to early development.  Transcripts that are specific to male germ cells play a role in the differentiation of embryonic stem cells and their function may not be easily replaced. They conclude that these accessory RNAs delivered in sperm may be necessary for fertility, and may influence the developing embryo with a signature only the male can provide.1Ostermeier et al., “Reproductive biology: Delivering spermatozoan RNA to the oocyte,” Nature 429, 154 (13 May 2004); doi:10.1038/429154a.Men have been taking a beating lately (see 03/31/2004 headline), so this should provide some rebuttal.  In this day of experimental families and marriages and test-tube reproduction, we need to realize that there is no substitute in a family for a man and a woman.  This extends all the way up from the gametes to the sexual identity and role modeling of the whole person.    The origin of sexuality is the “queen of evolutionary problems.”  To a Darwinist, it doesn’t make any sense.  It is costly and complex.  For a good treatment on the seriousness of this problem to Darwinians, see chapter 4 of the new book by Harrub and Thompson, The Truth About Human Origins (Apologetics Press, 2004).  Viewed instead as a gift of God for love, pleasure, education, diversity of roles and talents and gifts, and as a picture of his intimacy with his creatures, it can be seen as not just an accident of a purposeless past, but an awe-inspiring and beautiful thing.(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

How To Watch Major League Baseball Games Online

first_img5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout john paul titlow 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Related Posts 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…center_img For baseball fans, it’s an exciting time of year. For those who prefer to stream games online, however, the anticipation can be tinged with a bit of frustration. That’s because baseball games are still easiest to find on traditional cable or satellite TV.Fortunately for cord cutters, there are some options when it comes to tuning in online, some of them more, shall we say, up to legal snuff than others. First and foremost, there’s MLB.tv. That’s the official subscription streaming service of Major League Baseball in the U.S. For $20 per month, fans can live stream games in high definition from their browser with DVR-style control. For $25 per month, they can get access from iOS devices, Apple TV, Roku, Playstation 3, XBox 360 and more than 300 other devices. For fans fanatic enough to throw $130 a year at a multi-device subscription service, MLB.tv looks like the way the go. But there’s a catch — and it’s a big one.Hey! I Paid $130 And Can’t Watch The Home Team? Because cable companies and broadcast networks have a way of ruining things, MLB.tv only includes out-of-market games. That means that if I’m in Philadelphia, I can’t stream the Phillies game from any of the MLB apps, because Comcast SportsNet is paying big bucks for the exclusive rights to those games.MLB, in turn, wants to preserve that relationship by ensuring high-as-can-be ratings. As is so often the case, this arrangement works beautifully for the sports league and service providers, but sucks for viewers. One way to thwart this home team blackout is by using a VPN service like WiTopia, VyperVPN or StrongVPN to trick MLB into thinking you’re located elsewhere. It might technically be dishonest, but it is, so far as I can tell, perfectly legal. A less legally straightforward option would be to tune into pirated streams from shady third party sites. Sites like firstrowsports.eu and vipbox.tv are neither the best designed or safest looking sites in the world, but for desperate fans who want to tune into games without paying, they certainly offer the goods. Sites that offer pirated streams typically do so via links to Flash-based video streams or require users to download a desktop app — at one’s own risk, of course. Alternatively, some users prefer to use a Slingbox to remotely tune into games using their home’s pay television service or broadcast hookup. Lead photo courtesy of Wikipedia Tags:#Internet TV#mobile#Sports#Streaming video 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe Applast_img read more

Quick Tip: Adjust the Color of Water in After Effects

first_imgDownload the FREE Project File and Video Footage.Download Now! Learn how to easily adjust the color tone of water in your footage using Adobe After Effects. Includes free project file!In this After Effects tutorial, we are going to look at some quick and effective ways to adjust the color tone of water in our footage. Whether it’s a river, pond, or ocean, water can sometimes take on various color tones that are not very appealing. This can be a result of many factors, such as time of day, algal growth, or plain old mud.Using the Hue and Saturation effect and some basic masks in After Effects, we will add a teal/blue tone back into the water in our footage. (Note: you can use the color techniques from this tutorial for more than just water. You can also use them to change the hue of a blue sky or fields of green grass, etc.)For more complicated shots including objects in the water, lots of shadows, or camera movement, we can use the native Keylight effect in After Effects to separate the water from the original footage. This allows us to apply the Hue and Saturation effect only on the water, preventing unwanted color alterations to other parts of the image.Alternatively, if creating blue water isn’t your thing, you can create all kinds of trippy color looks by adjusting the Master Hue dial on the Hue and Saturation effect. (Hint: easy way to create a toxic spill.)Ready? Let’s dive into the tutorial. (Make sure you download the free project file to follow along!)last_img read more

2G scam: Chidambaram as guilty as Raja, claims Subramanian Swamy

first_imgAfter Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and BJP president Nitin Gadkari, it was the turn of Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy to level serious allegations against Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. Accusing Chidambaram of being involved in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, Swamy on Thursday alleged that the minister had received kickbacks and undervalued the spectrum cost. He also demanded that Chidambaram should be indicted as an additional accused in the case and demanded his resignation as the home minister. Swamy has already moved a special application in the Supreme Court in this connection. In 2008, licences of 2G spectrum were issued at 2001 prices in a bid to favour some big private companies. It led to a loss of around Rs 1.75 lakh crore to the exchequer. Noting that Chidambaram was the finance minister at the time of the scam, Swamy alleged that the move to undervalue 2G licenses was a joint decision of him along with then telecommunication minister A. Raja. “We have evidence now that P. Chidambaram had three separate meetings with A. Raja and decided on to grant 2G licences at 2001 prices. Chargesheet against Raja says that he is guilty because he fixed 2001 prices for the 2G spectrum, so Chidambaram too is guilty now,” Swamy insisted. DMK’s Raja and his party colleague Kanimozhi have been lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with the scam. Swamy also accused Chidambaram of being guilty of promoting businesses of ineligible telecom players. Holding Chidambaram guilty on three counts, Swamy said Chidambaram should be prosecuted and sent to jail. “We have tape recordings of Niira Radia in which it is revealed that Chidambaram has received kickbacks. On all these three charges Chidambaram is guilty and he must go to jail. Why was this allowed? Chidambaram encouraged it. He is unfit to be the home minister. Therefore he should be removed and he should be prosecuted,” Swamy said. Earlier, Gadkari had told Aaj Tak news channel that he had proof which could embarrass Chidambaram. He said the BJP MPs would soon provide the CBI evidence against him and seek a probe. Earlier in the week, Jayalalithaa too had slammed Chidambaram for his “fraudulent” election to the Lok Sabha and demanded his resignation. For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.advertisementlast_img read more
