Stars hails ‘transformative’ year as SBG posts growth

first_img Sports betting remains the main source of income at SBG, with revenue from this division up by 36.7% year-on-year to £406.5m. Stars has already set out plans to use SBG’s position in this market to achieve its own growth targets. In April, Stars announced it had agreed a deal worth $4.7bn to buy SBG from CVC Capital Partners. Stars finalised the acquisition in July and began the integration process. However, Stars was then ordered to delay further activity pending the result of an enquiry into the acquisition by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). In an earnings call, it was revealed that the CMA launched a formal review of the deal on August 23, with this due for completion on or before October 14. Should the ruling go in favour of Stars, it will be able to recommence integration. Aside from SBG, Stars has recently signed off a deal to become the majority shareholder in Australia’s CrownBet Holdings and subsequently purchased William Hill Australia. Ashkenazi said that this activity represents a “transformative year”, adding in the earnings call that Stars is now a “truly diversified global group” with a presence in all key regulated markets. “I’m very excited by the potential that I believe will result from all of our 2018 acquisitions,” Ashkenazi said in the call. He added in a statement: “We’ve executed on these transactions and looking forward into 2019, are now focused on integration and we are confident that we will deliver on our plans to grow market share both globally and in key markets. “SBG is a key component of this plan and we are excited about its potential as the fastest growing and one of the largest online and mobile sports betting and gaming businesses in the UK, the world’s largest regulated online gaming market.” Richard Flint, CEO of SBG, also spoke positively about the results, describing the 12 months as a “strong” period for the firm and saying the link-up with Stars will enable the company to take its products to a “truly global audience”. Flint said: “We enter the rest of 2018 and head into 2019 as part of one of the world’s largest publicly listed online gaming companies, and I am excited about the opportunities that this combination presents.” Reflecting on the results, Regulus analysts said underlying momentum at SBG remains “relatively strong and marketing share is still clearly being taken”. Analysts also talked up the potential of more growth as a result of the acquisition by Stars: “SBG’s mass-market focused approach is still likely growing the segment as well as share, but both of these are becoming more challenging as maturity bites. “Within this context Stars’ strategic ability to unlock new markets becomes increasingly important – critically while also preserving the unique operational characteristics that have made SBG the UK’s most successful domestic online gambling brand.” Casino & games Stars hails ‘transformative’ year as SBG posts growth Tags: Card Rooms and Poker Mobile Online Gambling Stars Group CEO Rafi Ashkenazi has described Sky Betting & Gaming (SBG) as “key” to the company’s global expansion plans after the acquired business posted impressive growth across key financial metrics for the 12 months to the end of June 2018. Total revenue at SBG amounted to £670.5m (€754.3m/$880.2m), up 30% on the previous year, largely driven by a 36.7% increase in sportsbook revenue. Gross profit was also up 33.2% year-on-year to £500.1m while operating profit climbed 26.5% to £86.7m. 17th September 2018 | By contenteditor Topics: Casino & games Finance Sports betting Poker Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Revenue and profit up in 2018 fiscal year Email Addresslast_img read more

FCA confirms ban on of binary option retail sales

first_imgLegal & compliance Regions: UK & Ireland The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is to introduce a permanent ban on the sale, marketing or distribution of binary options to retail consumers, with the new rules coming into effect from April 2. 29th March 2019 | By contenteditor The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is to introduce a permanent ban on the sale, marketing or distribution of binary options to retail consumers.Due to come into effect from April 2, the rules will be applicable to all companies that are either operating in or from the UK.The FCA’s new rules will operate in a similar way as the European Securities and Markets Authority’s (ESMA) European Union-wide, temporary restrictions on binary options. Binary options are financial trading products in which the user bets on a yes/no proposition, such as a company’s share price hitting a certain value, within a set period. If the share price hits this value, the player receives a payout, similar to betting on sports. However, if the share price fails to hit that target, then they lose their stake. However, the FCA’s rules differ in that they will apply to so-called ‘securitised binary options’ that were excluded from ESMA’s prohibition. These are binary options that are listed on a formal trading platform, are subject to a prospectus, and have minimum contract periods from the point of entry to the expiry of the binary option. Such products are not currently sold in or from the UK but the FCA has ruled that they pose the same risks for investors is extending the scope of the prohibition to prevent a market developing for these products. The FCA has said that such is the impact of the permanent ban that it could save retail consumers up to £17m (€19.7m/$22.2m) each year, in addition to cutting the risk of fraud by unauthorised entities claiming to offer such products.“Binary options are gambling products dressed up as financial instruments; by confirming our ban today we are ensuring that investors don’t lose money from an inherently flawed product,” executive director of strategy and competition at the FCA, Christopher Woolard, said. However, the FCA has warned that consumers in the UK should remain vigilant of binary option investment scams and should only deal with financial services firms authorised by the FCA.The FCA also reiterated that after the ban comes into effect, the sale of binary options products will be prohibited, so any firm offering services is likely to be a scam. Tech and new markets key motivations for industry jobseekers

first_imgAddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Topics: Casino & games People Sports betting Strategy Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Tech and new markets key motivations for industry jobseekers Pentasia’s 2019 edition of its Ambitions survey reveals that new technology and markets are key motivations for candidates seeking pastures new in the igaming industry, while learning beats earning for a majority of respondents.More than 1,000 professionals working in gaming and technology roles responded to the survey, revealing that many are particularly excited by the opportunity to take roles in which they work with innovative technology such as artificial intelligence. As one respondent says, such technology could “revolutionise the gaming world”, and 45% of those surveyed were keen to work in a role that incorporated AI.This was followed closely by new markets, in continents such as Asia and Africa, where countries are slowly but surely opening up to igaming. In total, 41% of those surveyed they were eager to work in these territories. These emerging markets were more attractive than the US market, which was of interest to 22% of respondents.Esports, meanwhile, has emerged as another key area of interest in 2019. A growing number of operators, not to mention startups, are looking to bring esports betting into the mainstream, and 26% are keen to work in the vertical.“Businesses must look constantly to the future,” Pentasia managing director Alastair Cleland said. “To understand what shape that future may take, it is valuable to view it through the eyes of the people within those businesses; the people who’ll lead, innovate and deliver results.“The results offer a fascinating insight into the thoughts, hopes and concerns of the people who will be crafting the landscape in our industry over 2019, 2020 and beyond.”For these professionals, the opportunity to learn something new was key, with 52% saying they were looking to learn something new in their career in the year ahead. This proved to be a greater ambition than earning more money, something that 45% saw as a key ambition.Looking at respondents’ current situations, it transpires that a significant number of igaming professionals are worried they are unfulfilled in their current roles. Fewer than one in six believe they will be able to fulfil their ambitions in their current role, and 39% believe a lack of career progression will prevent them from achieving their goals.Poor management is also a concern, with 33% citing these issues as a factor that will stunt their career progression.Indeed, the survey found that the level of job satisfaction had declined by almost 10% year-on-year.In terms of factors that will influence a candidate taking a new job opportunity, the chance to earn more money is at the forefront of professionals’ minds, with 60% saying it would influence whether they accepted an offer. However 70% said the chance to grow as professionals and learn more was a bigger motivation. The third factor turned out to be a better work-life balance, a key motivator for 38% of those surveyed. Unsurprisingly remote working followed, with 24%.While some are keen to stay at home, others are eager to move further afield. Western Europe is the most popular destination for those looking to relocate (30%), followed by the Mediterranean (27%). Europe beat the US, with 20% keen to relocate to the States, followed by Scandinavia on 12%.Read the full survey here.
