Last year, the Lakers played twice at Honda Center, defeating the Seattle Supersonics, 104-101, Oct. 12 and losing to the Denver Nuggets, 126-108, Oct. 26. ANAHEIM – The Los Angeles Lakers will play their annual exhibition game at the Honda Center tonight, facing the Utah Jazz, but the possibility of Anaheim having an NBA team of its own is not in the immediate future. The NBA has no plans to expand, according to Tim Frank, the league’s vice president for basketball communications. The Seattle SuperSonics, the league’s only team considering moving, are looking to Oklahoma City and Kansas City, Mo. to be their new home. Honda Center officials have been actively interested in trying to lure an NBA team for several years. The then-Vancouver Grizzlies were one possibility, but the team moved to Memphis in 2001. Anaheim was an alternative as the temporary home for the New Orleans Hornets after Hurricane Katrina forced their temporary move in 2005, but they chose Oklahoma City instead. “We continue to explore opportunities as they arise and are eager to speak with the NBA and team owners anytime regarding all that Honda Honda Center and Anaheim have to offer,” said Tim Ryan, the Honda Center’s president and chief executive officer. “We believe our first-class facility would make a great NBA home and know that Orange County is ready and willing to embrace a franchise.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
