Paper lands on list of top articles about special education

Lists that include “top,” “best of,” or “must read” are ones every author hopes to land on.For Kimberly Maich, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, her article Implementing iPads in the Inclusive Classroom Setting, has landed on one of these lists.Part of SAGE Publishing’s top articles of 2016 for special education, Maich, alongside PhD student Carmen Hall, wrote an article that provided practical suggestions to help guide teachers in utilizing classroom sets of iPads.“Knowledge mobilization is an area that I love,” says Maich. “I try to balance out research pieces with highly accessible pedagogical pieces that educators seem to particularly enjoy.”Maich explored the introduction to tablet technology in inclusive classrooms and the origins of those recommendations from a case study focus group, all of which were important elements of setting up classroom iPad use – from funding to teaching apps – which she then explains in practical terms.“Translating research findings is essential in the teaching field. That is what we are all about: practical applications. But we are also all about ensuring that those practical applications are powerful ones based on research findings.”Maich also enjoys collaborating with schools, community agencies and her research colleagues at Brock and other post-secondary institutions. She has other such collaborative work submitted for publication on the topics of special education leadership, school-based social skills interventions and visual strategies for classroom environments, as well as two upcoming case study books on Applied Behaviour Analysis and Ontario special education. You can read the full article, Implementing iPads in the Inclusive Classroom Setting here. read more
