Kohli appreciated the performance delivered by the spinners in the series and said,“The spinners were brilliant all three of them Axar Patel didn’t let the batsmen get on top of him That’s a remarkable thing when you don’t have any variation in your bowling and you still don’t let guys score I think it’s the height that really helps him getting that extra bounce and the extra pace he can generate Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal being wrist spinners will always keep you in the game I certainly felt that all three of them were pretty spot on with attacking all the time” Hailing Jasprit Bumrah’s performance the Indian captain credited the right-arm bowler for his abilities and congratulated him for getting the man of the match award “Jasprit has been our most effective short-format bowler in the last 18 months He has really worked on his bowling a lot especially his length ball has picked up more pace That’s very heartening to see because it never lets the batsmen get settled It’s not only about yorkers and slower balls any more He can bowl a good length ball and nick you off as well which I think is the biggest improvement in his bowling Credit to him for shaping his game in that way Getting a man of the series award in the subcontinent as a fast bowler it’s always a great thing to achieve He bowled in really good areas and he deserves to be the man of University is a bit of a distance from central Delhi where the political establishment of this country roosts but dear leaders make an effort Go to JNU and convince one of the brilliant feminists in the university’s teaching staff — like Nivedita Menon or Pratiksha Baxi — to give you a couple of lectures on gender and patriarchy If not anything else it will ensure that in the future when Indian politicians try to show how "pro-woman" they are they don’t make an idiotic spectacle of themselves like they have with the recent controversy surrounding AAP’s Kumar Vishwas In the last few years we’ve seen a surge of interest towards women and women’s issues Feminism is no longer a bad word Most of us would say this is a change that was long overdue For our political establishment however this streak of gender sensitivity has come out of nowhere and they’re struggling with it Kumar Vishwas AFP image While some continue to shock and regale India with appallingly sexist statements (just google "Mulayam Singh Yadav" and "Sanjay Nirupam Smriti Irani" for samples) most political parties have strenuously insisted that they are Indian women’s champions AAP supported the Womanifesto a six-point program aimed at social equality and women’s empowerment The BJP and Congress had television spots in which they tried to show they had a feminist side Unfortunately it becomes difficult to take them seriously when they pull stunts like the recent fiasco surrounding Aam Aadmi Party’s Kumar Vishwas best described by Firstpost’s Sandip Roy as a postmodern Ramayana AAP has been yelling itself hoarse claiming that the scandal is a BJP-orchestrated mess Then there were suggestions that there is a Congress angle to the whole affair Whether or not this is a politically-motivated controversy what this incident makes plain is just how idiotic the people we’ve voted to power are From what has been made public it seems a married woman has accused Vishwas of defamation after rumours of Vishwas and her having an affair were circulated on social media and Whatsapp The woman claims she and Vishwas didn’t have an illicit relationship Vishwas has said she’s like his sister So what’s the problem Vishwas didn’t deny the rumours when she asked him to in the past and now her husband is seriously miffed In an interview she explained why she needed Vishwas to deny the rumours: "Just because of this allegation my husband has left me I have two kids I come from a middle class family where they feel that since Kumar Vishwas is AAP spokesperson and a known face maybe there was something between the two I am unable to explain That’s why I want Kumar Vishwas to speak on this but he is not doing so" If this is indeed true then what has happened to this woman is very sad and unfair Except if there’s anyone against whom she should file a complaint it’s her husband Instead of trusting or supporting his wife the man is threatening her with divorce because of a rumour There’s wet tissue paper that’s less flimsy than social media gossip and yet the husband trusts those random messages more than he does his wife What will convince this husband of his wife’s innocence Not his wife’s statement but a denial from Vishwas As breakdown of trust goes that’s quite comprehensive The only thing more perplexing and tragic than a woman wanting to be with a man who thinks so little of her is the fact that she insists a statement from Vishwas will salvage her marriage Perhaps she also believes Santa Claus exists and that there’s a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow What is patently obvious is that unless there are further details that haven’t been disclosed there really isn’t much of a case against Vishwas At present the only charge against him is not denying a rumour which doesn’t come across as a particularly dastardly act Ignoring rumours is part and parcel of being a grown up and an essential aspect living in public glare Ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi — from an estranged wife to communal riots there are so many rumours that swirl relentlessly around him and he behaves as though none of them exist However the point isn’t whether rumours should be taken seriously Even in something as ostensibly silly as this case our society’s gender imbalance is evident A woman wants a man to deny a rumour so that her husband will not divorce her — it’s a nightmare of sexism and patriarchy-induced anxieties Why can’t this woman point out to her husband that her word should matter more to him than Vishwas’ public statement A woman is not her husband’s possession that he can throw her out of the house because he doesn’t ‘want’ her She has as much right to be in that home as he does Also Vishwas cannot be held responsible for what is clearly a lack trust between a married couple Vishwas may be sexist but that’s no justification for the husband behaving like a misogynist creep However to actually consider what position the woman finds herself in would be looking at real gender issues Not just from the perspective of how she’s treated by her husband but especially if the complaint against Vishwas is politically-motivated then this case could offer a very uncomfortable look at how women are seen by the Indian political establishment and what they need to do to catch the powerful people’s eye Instead what we’ve been shown is how eagerly Indian politicians cash in on the nation’s interest in women’s issues when there’s promise of political mileage Giving credibility to this woman’s complaints against Vishwas is making everyone involved look stupid We saw something similar unfold when the documentary India’s Daughter became the topic of a parliamentary debate We’re seeing it again now with Vishwas being accused of sexism only because that’s sounds outrage worthy Refusing to deny a rumour just doesn’t sound appalling enough (probably because it isn’t) There are countless cases of Indian women being victimised and/or exploited in the workplace but judging from what is on public record the AAP volunteer’s situation isn’t one of them Until and unless further details emerge indicating she has a real case against Vishwas the way all our politicians have leapt to action shows about as much rationality as lemmings running towards a cliff’s edge So dear leaders do yourselves (and us) a favour and get thee to JNU Sign up for a crash course in feminism because at least after that you’ll be better equipped to figure out which scandal is worth pursuing and what to say when pretending to be supportive of women New Delhi: Prime
